“If you only see one Japanese animated feature this year, see this one, and see it more than once.”
In this unconventional sci-fi romance from rising anime talent, Makoto Shinkai (5 Centimeters Per Second, The Garden of Words), teenagers Mitsuha (Mone Kamishiraishi) and Taki (Ryunosuke Kamiki) are strangers living completely different lives. Taki is a high school student in the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, juggling friends, studies and a part-time job at an Italian restaurant. Meanwhile Mitsuha is far away and very bored of her rural existence. She dreams of life in the big smoke and one night she pleads to God “Please, let me be a handsome Tokyo boy in my next life! Mitsuha’s wish to leave her mountain home connects the teens in an entirely bizarre way! But what does their newfound connection mean? And how will it bring them together?
Director Makoto Shinkai’s Japanese Box Office smash hit is also one of the most universally acclaimed films of 2016 with numerous critics dubbing him “the new Hayao Miyazaki”. Peter Debruge in Variety Magazine noted that “this vividly realized and emotionally satisfying feature ought to make Shinkai a household name - certainly in Japan, and with any luck, in other countries as well.”
