In a world where resources are running dangerously low and McMansion is listed in the Oxford dictionary, an ingenious movement to think big and go very small is sweeping the Western world.
In the lead up to his 30th birthday, Christopher Smith longed for a little patch of America he could call home. He purchased a small block of land in rural Colorado but lacked the funds to build. While he pondered how to reside on the land, he discovered the Tiny House movement emerging across North America.
In a country hit hard by the global recession, many Americans now find themselves lumbered with huge mortgages or worse still, without a home. Others have come to realise that home is really where the heart is, not where their millions of possessions reside. Tiny Houses are generally no bigger than an average car space, are built on trailers (to avoid building code dramas) and are simple enough for the average person to construct.
Tiny: A Story About Living Small, follows Christopher and his writer girlfriend, Merete as they construct their own home. The adventure that unfolds goes beyond learning basic construction and a crash course in plumbing. Along the way they meet other 'tiny housers' and discover the motivations, design canny and passionate love that this community has for the lifestyle change that they have all made.
Christopher and Merete also come to terms with the physicality of their lives - do they love stuff more than freedom, can their relationship withstand a life in the country and just how much do you trust turning on a light that you installed yourself!
What these tiny homes lack in space they more than make up for in economic freedom, design innovation and environmental smarts.
