About Game design
Games & digital culture explores the artistry and creative wizardry behind games and technology we use from retro to recent. Discover how Sonic the Hedgehog managed to challenge our favourite Italian plumber for dominance of the platformer genre, the id Software team brought cult classic DOOM back into relevance for a new generation of gamers, or traditional Mexican sculpture influenced the visual aesthetic of critically acclaimed Grim Fandango.
Video games have become ever more ubiquitous in today’s culture, and allow the player to explore a vast range of experiences, from epic dragon-slaying journeys to intimate and soul-searching personal narratives.
They are an inherently multi-modal artform that combines many aspects of traditional artistic expression including painting, sculpture, literature and narrative, sound and music design. They allow the player to do this in an interactive way that is unique to the medium.
