A fresh take on ghost stories, The Darkside brings together an atmospheric collection of supernatural tales in an anthology film by director Warwick Thornton.
Unlike any other feature film – in format, in feeling and in content
A moving portrait of ordinary people with extraordinary tales from the other side, The Darkside is a funny-tender and emotionally stirring journey into things that go bump in the night.
Multi-disciplinary artist and filmmaker, Warwick Thornton (Samson & Delilah, The Beach) teamed with producer Kath Shelper on what they devised as a cross-platform project anchored by the film. Seeking tales of the afterlife, they put out a call for people to come forward with their ghostly tales. The pitch read, “we are looking for firsthand ghost stories that are poignant to our struggles and relevant to indigenous issues – the blacker the better!”.
From a selection of the many submissions received, Thornton and his crew recorded first person audio interviews with the storyteller/narrators. These were developed into the episodic scripts that are interpreted on screen by some of Australia's finest actors, including Deborah Mailman, Bryan Brown, Claudia Karvan, Aaron Pedersen, Sacha Horler, Jack Charles and Shari Sebbens.
A familiar thread emerged as Thornton gathered his material: “When I embarked on this journey to the other side, I imagined finding a whole bunch of scary as hell ghost stories – but what I ended up finding was a beautiful collection of poignant stories about family and connection."
