When

21 Aug – 2 Nov 2008

Correspondences brings together the work of two visionaries of independent cinema.

Spanish director Víctor Erice's small but acclaimed body of work has been widely acknowledged for its poetic and masterful storytelling. Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami is regarded as a master of contemporary world cinema, voted by many critics as the most important director of the nineties.

Born within a week of each other in June 1940 and both drawing inspiration from film, video, photography and painting, Kiarostami and Erice also share a minimalist style, a thematic focus on childhood and landscape, and a nuanced contemplation of time.

Although these two great filmmakers met face-to-face only once before this exhibition, they discovered powerful parallels in their interests and ideas. Featuring film, photography and new work created especially for the exhibition, Correspondences represents the long distance creative dialogue and intimate rapport that developed between Erice and Kiarostami.

Produced by the Centre de Cultura Contemporània de Barcelona and la Casa Encendida de Madrid, with the support of the State Corporation for Spanish Cultural Action Abroad (SEACEX).
