Artist Jason Phu has reclaimed the wise sayings from martial arts and wuxia films and remixed them into a moving image philosophy for surviving contemporary life. Divided into chapters featuring insights and meditations from different movies, Analects of Kung Phu offers a guide to ourselves and society taught by action stars and movie heroes.

Kaylene Whiskey

Coming soon

Yankunytjatjara artist Kaylene Whiskey is the recipient of the Melbourne Art Foundation 2022 Commission. Her paintings feature iconic pop culture figures such as Dolly Parton and Tina Turner on a vivid backdrop of remote desert community landscapes, interacting with native plants and wildlife and engaging in traditional Anangu activities. Her new single channel video work will be unveiled at the Melbourne Art Fair in February 2022 before moving to its permanent home in the ACMI collection.

Games Lab

Presented by Big Ant Studios

From February 16, our Games Lab in The Story of the Moving Image will showcase six playable vintage videogames, including the first VFL/AFL game ever created, Aussie Rules Footy (1991), and International Cricket (1992), where players can bat, bowl and field to their pixelated heart’s content. Also featured are Flight of the Amazon Queen (1995), The Dame Was Loaded (1995), Shadowrun (1993) and Xena: Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (1999).
