Set in 19th century Baden-Baden, the film details the trials and tribulations of several chronic gamblers, foremost among them young Alexei. Alexei is in love with Pauline who needs large amounts of money. In order to support her, Alexei is encouraged to gamble by Blanche, a mysterious adventuress. There are two earlier versions of this film: ‘The Great Sinner’ (1949) directed by Robert Siodmak ; ‘Le Joueur’ (1938) directed by Louis Daquin.
