This version of Sue’s novel was originally conceived as a live-to-air production. Rodolphe de Sombreuil runs over a poor man in the streets and promises he will look after his young daughter. Sombreuil disguises himself as a working-class man and goes looking for Fleur de Marie who has been kidnapped by shady underworld characters. He is appalled by the squalor in which people live in the depressing working class slums.
