Jean Cottard lives in Lyons where he works as a police officer. He occupies his leisure time with writing. Called to Paris by his publisher, Jean uses the opportunity to visit his relatives. To his great surprise, he discovers they are all involved in criminal activities. Little by little, he learns that his father has become an expert forger, his brother is a drug addict while his stepmother is works as a prostitute. Things get worse. Jean’s stepmother is murdered aboard the train that was meant to take him back to Lyons. As Jean investigates the murder, he realises just how personnal this affair is.
