Anarchist Philippe Lutcher vows to kill anyone who represents ‘the establishment’. He ends up shooting idolised music-hall singer Clara Stuart in full view of her audience. The singer escapes death and the two get to know each other, eventually falling in love. At the trial, Clara offers to testify in favour of Philippe, but he refuses, determined to become a martyr to his cause.
