Roger, a baker, and Jean, a journalist, are both interned in a POW camp in Germany. They are given an opportuniy to escape when they are taken to work as farm hands on local properties. Jean tricks the farmer’s innocent daughter, Helga, into helping him escape. Roger, who has truly fallen for a local girl, decides to stay. But, soon after Jean’s escape, Helga falls under the suspicion of the local authorities. Award: Venice Film Festival 1960: Golden Lion.
