This first episode focuses on the passionate relationship between man and the ocean. The sea was first of all an endless source of food for the coastal population. The series than moves on to profile the first bold sea voyagers: polynesian canoes, pharaonic pout sailing up and down the Nile as well as the Greek and roman sailors. Other topics include: Viking ship, the settlement of Greenland, the adoption of the latin (square) sail as well as the invention of the compass.
