A young Russian boy goes missing, throwing his estranged parents into turmoil as they grapple with their own guilt and complicity.
Alyosha, a 12-year-old Russian boy, finds himself stuck in the middle of bickering divorced parents who are in the midst of selling the family home. His father Boris has remarried and is expecting a child with his young wife, while his mother Zhenya is in a relationship with an older man who has a teenage daughter.
During one particular bitter argument, Alyosha overhears his parents talking about putting him into an orphanage, neither wanting to claim custody of him. Not long after, Alyosha goes missing. At first the police believe he has run away but as the days stretch on Boris and Zhenya begin to fear the worst and start to grapple with their own complicity and parental neglect.
Curator’s Note
Director Andrey Zvyagintsev’s shattering drama is a blistering commentary on contemporary Russian mores. Like his previous feature Leviathan (2014), Russian complicity and moral corruption is in his crosshairs.
Debuting at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival where it went on to win the Jury Prize, Loveless is an unforgettable and riveting indictment on a country that has lost its soul.
