ACMI Presents
The Human Voice
La voz humana
When
Thu 21 May 2026
Join us in the cinema for a free screening of Pedro Almodóvar’s stylish and striking adaptation of Jean Cocteau’s play, starring Tilda Swinton as a woman abandoned by her lover.
Tilda Swinton stars as an actor and a lover: jilted, alone and at a loose end. Oscillating between anger and despondency, a calm comes over her when her ex-lover reaches out by phone, and drawing on professional know-how, her performance begins.
Curator's note
The Human Voice premiered at the Venice International Film Festival at a time when many cities were locking down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the Venice permiere did go ahead in person, many festival screenings around the world did not, including in Melbourne. This will be the first cinema screening of the film in Melbourne.
In 2026 Pedro Almodóvar’s new film Bitter Christmas will make its international premiere at Cannes, following a release in Spain earlier in the year. The film marks the director’s return to Spanish-language film after The Human Voice, Strange Way of Life and his Golden Lion-winning feature film The Room Next Door.
It is every inch, through and through an Almodóvar film, and Tilda Swinton is perfect as his muse.
