Cate Blanchett stars as Elizabeth I in Shekhar Kapur’s sweeping historical drama, with Jill Bilcock’s measured, character-driven editing shaping the political tension and transformation at the heart of the film.

Shekhar Kapur’s Elizabeth follows the early reign of Elizabeth I as she navigates court intrigue, political instability and the consolidation of power in a male-dominated world. Cate Blanchett delivers a career defining performance as the young queen, charting her transformation from vulnerable monarch to calculated ruler in a court defined by surveillance, betrayal and control.

Curator’s note
Jill Bilcock’s editing in Elizabeth reflects a shift in approach from her more kinetic collaborations with Baz Luhrmann, instead emphasising political tension, restraint and character transformation. Bilcock adopts a more measured rhythm, using longer takes and strategic pacing to foreground performance, atmosphere and psychological detail. The film reframes historical spectacle as intimate psychological drama, balancing grandeur with a focus on character interiority.

Rather than driving energy through rapid montage, the edit allows scenes to unfold with a controlled intensity, often cutting against musical or rhythmic expectation to heighten unease and internal conflict. This approach foregrounds Cate Blanchett’s performance, shaping the audience’s experience of Elizabeth’s gradual consolidation of power as both an external shift and an internal transformation. Bilcock’s editing is equally attentive to spectacle and to the subtleties of character, capturing both the scale of political drama and the quieter emotional pressures beneath it.

The film demonstrates Bilcock’s adaptability as an editor, moving away from the maximalist rhythms of Strictly Ballroom and Romeo + Juliet toward a more restrained, observational style. In doing so, the film highlights her ability to shape rhythm, performance and tension to suit the specific emotional and narrative demands of the film.

Shrewdly sidesteps all the cliches of British costume drama with its bold, modern approach.
