Two unlikely strangers find connection when they set out to explore the Pilbara, in Sue Brooks' road movie romance, shaped by Jill Bilcock’s thoughtful editing.
Sandy (Toni Collette), an Australian geologist working on new mapping software, is assigned the task of accompanying Hiromitsu (Gotaro Tsunashima), a Japanese businessman, across the remote Pilbara region as part of a corporate negotiation. A misunderstanding leads Hiromitsu to believe Sandy is his driver, setting the pair on an unplanned journey deep into the Western Australian desert.
There, professional boundaries dissolve and cultural misunderstandings gradually give way to connection. Against the vast, elemental landscape of the outback, Japanese Story traces an evolving relationship shaped as much by silence and distance as by conversation, revealing the shifting dynamics between two people forced into proximity in an unfamiliar world.
Curator’s note
In Japanese Story, Jill Bilcock adopts a restrained, observational approach to editing, shaped by performance and landscape. Working within Sue Brooks’ understated direction, the edit is defined by patience and control, allowing scenes to unfold with minimal interruption.
Bilcock’s approach is deeply character-led, privileging emotional shifts over formal manipulation of pace. Rather than accelerating narrative momentum through cutting, she often holds on performance, using longer takes to allow tension, discomfort and connection to emerge organically between Sandy and Hiromitsu. This measured rhythm reflects the gradual erosion of distance between the characters as they move deeper into the Pilbara landscape.
A pivotal sequence demonstrates this sensitivity, sustaining focus on Sandy as she processes a profound and transformative moment alone in the desert. The decision to remain with Toni Collette's performance, rather than cutting away, underscores Bilcock’s instinct for when to intervene and when to simply observe. In doing so, Japanese Story highlights her adaptability as an editor, revealing a practice grounded not in stylistic consistency, but in a precise responsiveness to character, tone and emotional truth.
Collette's pitch-perfect performance and the stunning evocation of the forbidding and beautiful outback make this film unexpectedly rewarding.
