Toni Collette stars as Muriel Heslop in PJ Hogan’s beloved Australian comedy about friendship and escape from suburban limitation, shaped by Jill Bilcock’s emotionally attuned editing.

Muriel Heslop (Toni Collette) thinks ABBA is tops, fantasises about getting married one day and dreams of escape from Porpoise Spit. After an impromptu trip to Hibiscus Island, she teams up with her new best friend Rhonda Epinstalk (Rachel Griffiths), and the two head out to start a new life together.

Writer-director PJ Hogan's breakthrough feature film endures as one of the most-loved Australian comedies of all time. The film is imbued with a profound respect for its characters who defy caricature and are given sometimes disarming depth. So influential was the film that it became a defining work of the 'glitter cycle': the wave of flamboyant Australian comedies of the 1990s that marked a celebrated new chapter in local cinema.

Curator’s note
In Muriel’s Wedding, Jill Bilcock’s editing carefully balances comedy with moments of emotional isolation, shaping the film’s distinctive tonal duality. Her approach allows the film to move fluidly between heightened, music-driven sequences, including Muriel and Rhonda’s iconic ABBA lip-sync performances, and quieter, more vulnerable moments that reveal the emotional cost of Muriel’s fantasies.

Guided by PJ Hogan’s emphasis on empathy and character, Bilcock’s edit ensures that humour is never detached from emotional truth. The film shifts between exuberance and discomfort with precision, using rhythm and pacing to underscore the instability of Muriel’s internal world. The result is an edit that is both playful and deeply humane, one that honours Muriel's longing without ever diminishing it, and that remains central to the film's enduring place in Australian cinema.
