Tom Hanks and Paul Newman star in Sam Mendes’ Road to Perdition, a restrained gangster drama set during the Great Depression, shaped by Jill Bilcock’s controlled, atmospheric editing.
Set in 1930s Illinois during the Great Depression, Road to Perdition follows Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks), a mob enforcer whose loyalty to his crime family is shattered after a personal tragedy exposes him and his son to danger. As they go on the run, Sullivan seeks both survival and revenge, navigating a world shaped by violence, betrayal and fractured paternal bonds.
Sam Mendes’ adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name is marked by its painterly cinematography, measured pacing and moral introspection, featuring acclaimed performances from Tom Hanks, Paul Newman and Jude Law. The film stands apart within the gangster genre for its restrained tone and emphasis on atmosphere, grief and consequence rather than spectacle.
Curator's note
Jill Bilcock’s editing in Road to Perdition is defined by restraint, control and a quietly observational sensibility. Working within Sam Mendes’ meditative approach to the gangster genre, Bilcock’s editing adopts a controlled rhythm that privileges atmosphere, composition and performance over overt narrative propulsion.
Bilcock shapes the film’s rhythm through measured pacing and carefully modulated tension, allowing silence, composition and performance to carry emotional weight. The edit unfolds with a sense of inevitability, reinforcing the film’s themes of fate, loyalty and moral consequence. This restraint is most evident in the film’s climactic confrontation, where cutting and sound design are pared back to heighten emotional impact and underscore the stark finality of violence.
In adapting her approach to Mendes’ controlled, sombre style, Bilcock demonstrates the full breadth of her editorial practice, moving from the maximalism seen in her some of her previous collaborations to a spare, disciplined language of editing that remains deeply attuned to character and emotion.
