A young boy embarks on an emotional journey for art’s sake in Cartoon Saloon’s wonderfully distinctive first feature film.
Twelve-year-old Brendan lives with his uncle, Cellach, in the Abbey of Kells amongst the monks who are under constant threat from the Vikings. When Brother Aidan, a master illustrator, arrives, Brendan learns of his own great artistic talents.
Brendan is tasked with fetching gall nuts from the nearby forest to make ink – simple enough, but Brendan’s errand is surrounded by dangers and magical discoveries.
Curators note
Drawing on Celtic art, history and mythology, The Secret of Kells is a radiant celebration of hand-drawn animation and the power of creativity. Brendan’s emotional journey is conveyed through expressive, elegant character design, capturing a young boy’s courage as he learns to trust his own imagination.
Winner of the Audience Award at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, this acclaimed debut from Cartoon Saloon remains a landmark of contemporary animation.
– Reece Goodwin, Curator (Film & TV)
With its jewel-bright colors and intricate use of lines, the result is absolutely luscious to behold.
