A young girl discovers a magical world hidden in the neighbouring forest in Cartoon Saloon’s Oscar-nominated adventure.

In seventeenth‑century Ireland, a young girl, Robyn, and her wolf‑hunter father (Sean Bean from Game of Thrones) are outsiders in town after migrating from England to Kilkenny. By the Lord Protector’s decree, he is tasked with killing the last wolfpack in Kilkenny’s neighbouring forest – something that will appease the other villagers.

Aspiring to be a hunter herself, Robyn secretly follows her father on a hunting trip. As things go horribly wrong for her, she finds an unexpected friend in wolfwalker Mebh – an unruly young girl who can transform into a wolf at night. Mebh’s mother has gone missing, and the pair set out to find her.

Curator’s note
In 2014, we saw Cartoon Saloon bring the shapeshifting selkie from Celtic mythology to the screen. Wolfwalkers sees the animation studio follow suit, carving out a sister project that clicks into the former like a perfect jigsaw piece. Wolfwalkers introduces young viewers to the mythological creatures of the same name, who live as wolves at night.

For older audiences, there are themes of environmental sustainability and colonialism to sink their teeth into, but for people of all ages, Wolfwalkers is an exciting ride with magical discoveries and unexpected emotional depths. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Film, and the animation is just that — beautifully crafted with a fluidity that will amaze

Watch it again (and again) just to revel in the staggering artistry of the animation and the joyous, unruly energy.
