As a State-owned cultural institution, ACMI complies with the Victorian Government AI guidelines and Australia’s national AI framework.
ACMI’s position on artificial intelligence, including generative AI begins with our role as a museum of screen culture. Screen culture has always been shaped by the media technologies of its time, and generative AI is the latest in a long line of those technologies. Therefore, ACMI has a responsibility to contextualise AI, and help audiences understand its impact.
The following principles guide how we make decisions about AI usage. They aim to protect the rights of artists, stakeholders and content owners, while aligning with our mission to be a globally recognised hub for the screen sector.
- Purposeful: AI is used only where it delivers public, creative, or operational value, without compromising quality, care, or staff accountability.
- Human: people and their expertise remain at the centre of ACMI's work.
- Responsible: we use AI with care and guardrails – checking for accuracy, respecting privacy, rights and cultural protocols, and considering bias and environmental impact.
- Transparent: we are open about how and where AI is used at ACMI.
- Empowered: we equip our people with the tools, guidance and capability to use AI confidently, safely and effectively.
