AI Game Design Hackathon
In 2024 ACMI drew on the expertise of Leon Furze to pilot an AI Game Design Hackathon with a team of year 9 students and their teachers. Using Generative AI tools, the participants engaged in a fast-paced day to created imaginative videogame elements for a Dungeons and Dragons style adventure videogame.
Over the course of the day, teams worked together to create:
- Narratives, characters and dialogue scripts using text generation
- Concept art, character design and level design using image generation
- Text-based adventure game elements and mechanics using code generation such as Python, HTML and JavaScript.
Our next Hackathon runs on 10 November 2025 (booking link to come). No experience with Generative AI is needed nor skills in coding - participants just need an interest in technology and in game design.
Alternatively, teachers keen to try running a Hackathon can check out the Game Lessons resource below.

Thank you so much for having us! The structure of the sessions was great, in terms of timing and focusing on narrative, then visual, then putting it together with code. The girls and us staff had a great time, and it gave us lots of ideas.
