Community Outreach

Intergenerational learning at ACMI and free access to exhibitions sparks joy and lasting memories.

In 2023 ACMI invited our first group of parents and carers from the Brimbank Community Hubs (comprising five school communities) for a memorable outing to ACMI. The visit included a dynamic animation workshop and a tour of Story of the Moving Image.

The day provided a fantastic opportunity to welcome new families and give them a taste of the many experiences ACMI has to offer and was marked by enthusiastic engagement and positive feedback.

Since our pilot, we have run three more Community Hub visits, participants were also gifted ACMI memberships and family tickets to our major exhibitions, including Goddess, Beings and The Future and Other Fictions. Each of these visits demystifies a trip to Melbourne CBD and helps pave the way for families to engage with ACMI on weekends and school holidays.

We have since extended the invitation to families from Al Taqwa College in 2024 and you can hear from some of the families in the video below.

The National Community Hubs Program supports culturally diverse families, particularly mothers with young children, to connect, share and learn.

"Our families were thrilled to be invited to the Beings Exhibition at ACMI, and it turned out to be a truly enriching experience for both children and adults alike. One of the standout moments was when we became part of the moving artwork; it was mesmerizing to see how our imaginations could come to life in such a creative way. What made the day even more special was witnessing the vibrant connections forming among families. The exhibition fostered an incredible sense of community, where laughter and curiosity echoed throughout the space. It was heart-warming to see our families engaging with one another, sharing stories, and celebrating their diverse backgrounds. The experience highlighted the power of art to bridge gaps and create social connections. It reminded us all of the importance of togetherness, creativity, and the joy of shared experiences. By coming together in this way, we not only deepened our bonds as families but also strengthened the fabric of our community. The Being Exhibition truly became a celebration of imagination, connection. Thank you for having us!"
