Sweet As - NAIDOC Week Student Screening
Celebrate 50 Years of Deadly
When
Tue 14 Jul 2026
10.15am - 12.20pm
Join us for a special NAIDOC Week screening of Sweet As, followed by a facilitated film talk designed for First Nations secondary students.
Directed by Nyul Nyul and Yawuru filmmaker Jub Clerc, Sweet As (2022) is a coming-of-age road movie set in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The film follows Murra (Shantae Barnes-Cowan), a shy and withdrawn teenager who joins a group photography trip with a group of spirited teens on the cusp.
On their bus rise through Country, Murra (also referred to as Kayla) begins to open up. The film uses silence, landscape and visual storytelling to explore themes of identity, belonging and connection.
This NAIDOC screening includes a film viewing, followed by a short talk where we unpack how the film communicates meaning through character, theme and film form. We focus on Murra’s journey and the subtle shifts that take place through relationships, time on Country and new ways of seeing.
Note: This is a mob‑first session designed specifically for First Nations students, with teachers and school staff welcome to attend and support them.
