Seniors Film Festival: Seniors in Sci-Fi

Join us in the cinema for a FREE series of thoughtful science fiction films that place characters of a certain age in the centre.

With the median age on the rise, Australia is an ageing population, but we don’t see that reflected on our screens to scale. And when we examine the future-focused science fiction genre there’s a definite bias towards younger protagonists. We think that cinema should do a better job of representing older characters on screen.

For this year’s Seniors Film Festival, we’re inviting you to our cinemas to consider the power of representation, why it matters and how framing science fiction films around senior characters can have a profound impact on the kinds of films that are made and how they’re experienced. The films in this program all have new technology and innovation at their heart but with seniors as the central characters, they become more thoughtful, emotional and philosophical.

So park the spaceship; there are no laser gun fights or light-speed chases here. Instead, strap yourself in for some thoughtful, deeply human science fiction gems that ponder life’s big questions.
