Michael Corleone’s transformation from war hero to ruthless crime boss redefines the anti-hero in this iconic masterpiece.
Francis Ford Coppola’s landmark film chronicles the rise of the Corleone crime family and the transformation of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) from a reluctant outsider to a ruthless crime boss. Initially wanting to distance himself from his family's criminal empire, Michael, a decorated World War II veteran, returns home with the intention of staying morally separate. However, circumstances gradually pull him into the family business.
Michael’s transformation into an anti-hero subverts traditional Hollywood hero archetypes. Unlike classic heroes who fight for justice, his actions are driven by revenge, loyalty and the consolidation of power. While he remains composed and charismatic, his moral decline becomes evident as he sacrifices his principles and relationships for the survival of the Corleone empire.
The Godfather redefines the cinematic hero by blurring the line between good and evil, making Michael a character we sympathise with, even as he descends into moral darkness. His story explores how power can corrupt, reshaping our understanding of heroism.
