Cate Blanchett goes full Angela Merkel in Guy Maddin's surreal and unrestrained fever dream.

At their annual G7 summit held under a pond-side gazebo, the seven leaders of the world’s wealthiest liberal democracies meet to begin work on drafting a provisional statement. Naïve crushes, quiet resentments and unresolved tensions interrupt their work, but soon their disruptions turn apocalyptic.

Curator's Note

Rumours is the comedy we need in 2024.

Guy Maddin and the Johnsons' absurdist vision of tit for tat politics amidst serious existential strife is a ridiculous and ridiculously entertaining rollercoaster ride into the weird imaginations of its creators.

Rumours is hopefully destined for midnight movie cult status, nicely contradicting the film's star-studded black-tie premiere at the 77th Cannes Film Festival where it screened out of competition. It would make a beautiful contradiction that suits the film.
