Shot over two years, The Invasion crafts a unique portrait of the population throughout Ukraine amidst the unrelenting Russian invasion. As bodies are put to rest one moment and young soldiers marry their partners the next, Sergei Loznitsa's quietly observational documentary gives a loud voice to Ukrainian resilience and a nation determined to defend its right to exist.
The Invasion premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024 out of competition as a special screening. The inclusion of Sergei Loznitsa's Two Prosecutors marks the director's return to the festival for two consecutive years.
I have been making this film with deep pain in my heart and with great love for my country. This film is born out of compassion.
