Émilie (Lucie Zhang) is looking for a female flatmate to move into her spare room. When a man named Camille (Makita Samba) knocks on her door, confusion sets in, but he soon moves in and things soon get complicated. The line between flatmate and lover is immediately blurred, as they both search for connection inside the apartment and out.
Based on three graphic novels by Adrian Tomine, Jacques Audiard drew on the vast talents of fellow directors Céline Sciamma and Léa Mysius to adapt and weave the works together to screen. The resulting film, beautifully shot in black and white, suitably captures the intersecting lives of four Parisians with all their complicated trappings as they navigate life, friendships and love together and apart.
The film premiered at the 74th Cannes Film Festival where it screened in competition. 2024 marks the director's return to Cannes with Emilia Perez, his new film starring Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez and Edgar Ramírez.
