A down-on-his-luck cook finds himself balancing murder, mischief and romance in this charming love letter to inner city Melbourne.
Carl (Sam Neill) is a cook in a seedy Brunswick nightclub, with a shiftless approach to life and a dominating mother.
Simultaneously becoming involved with the death of Mustafa (the drug-dealing Turkish kitchenhand), and falling in love with the barmaid, Sophie (played by Zoe Carides with zesty charm), he suddenly finds himself embroiled in murder and mayhem.
John Ruane’s oddball first feature balances satirical comedy, off-the-wall black humour with an array of engaging, eccentric characters. Death in Brunswick remains both fresh and highly engaging.
Join us for this very special screening of what is fast becoming an Australian cult classic as we pay tribute to the late and great Sam Neill.
With its multicultural setting in suburban Melbourne, its contemporary tone and its snappy tone, Death in Brunswick is as fresh today as when it was made, with plenty of chuckles and some laugh-out-loud moments to cherish.
