Andrea Arnold’s hugely acclaimed film from the fringes is the perfect antidote to Hollywood’s unhealthy obsession with privileged teens.
After a chance encounter in a strip mall carpark, Star (a luminous Sasha Lane in her acting debut) drops everything and hits the road with a mag crew. Untethered and self-sufficient, the group travels to town after town selling magazine subscriptions in suburban enclaves.
Life on the road feels fun and free, but the realities of a capitalist market lurk around them.
Curator’s Note
Hollywood returns time and again to clichés of middle-class high school life and the conniving rich kids who rule the roost of elite prep-schools. I present American Honey: the perfect antidote.
Inspired by a New York Times article on mag crews in America, Arnold’s first American co-production shines a light on a very specific and marginal corner of youth culture that anyone standing still could blink and miss. A freewheeling road movie across a decaying American heartland, Arnold’s film succinctly captures the freedom of youth and the burden of responsibilities, both good and bad.
American Honey premiered at the 69th Cannes Film Festival where it received the Jury Prize. This marked the third Jury Prize for Andrea Arnold for three consecutive films of hers.
– Reece Goodwin, Curator (Film & TV)
American Honey throbs with raw teenage hormones and sheer chutzpah in a 21st-century version of On the Road.
