Andrea Arnold’s debut feature is sensual thriller that casts a female gaze over the dangerous and seductive act of surveillance.

Kate Dickie (Lysa Arryn in Game of Thrones) stars as Jackie, a CCTV camera operator whose daily protective gaze over the Red Road Flats, a Glaswegian housing estate, takes a dangerous turn when she spots a mysterious man (Tony Curran) from her past.

Using the CCTV monitors to follow and trace this man’s movements, Jackie’s initial curiosity leads her down a dangerous path of obsession and desire, which escalates into full-blown voyeurism and surveillance.

It was made as part of a project called ‘Advance Party’, which came about from a conversation between Scottish producer Gillian Berrie, and Danish filmmakers Lars von Trier and Anders Thomas Jensen. Jensen, Berrie and fellow executive producer Lone Scherfig proposed a set of rules for three films to be made as part of the project: the films needed to be shot and set in Scotland, using the same characters and cast, with each film made by a different first-time director. Arnold shot Red Road largely in the Danish avant-garde Dogme 95 style, using handheld cameras and natural light.
