Beware of the bureaucrat in Michael Haneke’s adaptation of Franz Kafka’s unfinished final novel.
Arriving in a small wintry town for work, a land surveyor named K is promptly told he can’t stay without a permit – all strangers must have permission from the castle. However, every effort K makes to visit the castle is stymied by authorities.
Curator’s Note
After completing his trilogy in 1994 with 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance, Michael Haneke seemed to break free of the confines of trilogy-making with two distinctly different films in 1997. In May, he released Funny Games which leaned towards (but not completely into) genre filmmaking, but a few months earlier he released the literary adaptation The Castle.
The film is sometimes considered a television work on account of it being released in Austria on the public broadcaster ORF who partially funded production, however it premiered at the 47th annual Berlin International Film Festival and screened in film festivals and theatrically around the world.
