David Lynch's dark space opera is a curio in the director's already curious body of work.

In the year 10191, the spice melange is the most valuable commodity in the universe. When control over the planet Arrakis – the only source of melange – is handed over to the noble family of House Atreides, they are immediately thrust into the crosshairs of others seeking power.

Their rivals House Harkonnen soon make a play for Arrakis with domination on their minds. Meanwhile, the Bene Gesserit, a powerful sisterhood of truth sayers, seeks out young Paul Atreides, determined to discover if he is the chosen one.

Curator's note

Following the success of The Elephant Man, David Lynch was reportedly offered the chance to direct Return of the Jedi. He declined, coincidentally choosing another space opera: the much darker epic, possibly more aligned with his style, Dune.

Plagued with production delays, producer interference and brutal re-editing, Lynch was so let down with the final version of the film that he refused to talk about it for most of his career. It was famously a commercial and critical disappointment upon its release, however, for every flaw the film has its charms: stunning production design, an excellent cast and, yes, good direction.
