David Lynch channels Vertigo, Kiss Me Deadly and 1940s films noir more broadly in his haunting exploration of darkness and doppelgängers.
Dick Laurent is dead.
That’s the message that comes through the intercom when someone buzzes Fred Madison’s apartment, but nobody seems to be at the door. That’s not the only strange thing. Fred and his wife, Renee, receive a mysterious videotape of their apartment. It could be from a real estate agent, but soon the videotapes become more intrusive and threatening.
Curator’s note
With the exception of the Californian sun creeping into a handful of sequences, David Lynch’s nightmarish neo-noir is ink-black and gothic to the core.
One of his first film projects, Trent Reznor produced a rich soundtrack for the film including instrumentals by Twin Peaks composer Angelo Badalamenti and tracks from David Bowie and the Smashing Pumpkins. The film includes This Mortal Coil’s thoroughly cinematic ‘Song to the Siren’ – a song Lynch had been courting since Blue Velvet.
Lost Highway is shot exquisitely by cinematographer Peter Deming, who went on to shoot Mulholland Drive and every episode of Twin Peaks: The Return. Any single frame would take pride of place on a gallery wall.
