In his prequel to the phenomenal TV show Twin Peaks, David Lynch leans further into the series’ rich and nightmarish mythology.
When the body of a young woman is discovered wrapped in plastic, FBI agents Sam Stanley (Kiefer Sutherland) and Chester Desmond (Chris Isaak) are sent to investigate in the inhospitable town of Deer Meadow, Washington. The victim, Teresa Banks, was not known to many locals, but something strange seems to circle around the case.
A year later in the nearby town of Twin Peaks, high school student Laura Palmer seems to be living an idyllic teenage life, but under the surface she is filled with secrets.
Curator's note
Following the end of Twin Peaks – the series concluded after two seasons due to declining ratings – David Lynch returned to the Pacific Northwestern town in 1992 for a feature film. The series that asked audiences “Who killed Laura Palmer?” was expanded upon with a prequel that promised to show what happened.
While the film certainly delivered on that promise, audiences might not have expected the dialling down of the series’ quirkiness in favour of a dark narrative crossing over into nightmarish territory.
Since premiering at the 45th Cannes Film Festival, it’s emerged as a cult favourite and has received amplified critical praise.
