A career-spanning season pairing Lynne Ramsay's celebrated films with works in dialogue with her introspective, sensory approach to cinema.
Lynne Ramsay arrived fully formed as a filmmaker with a series of evocative award-winning shorts: Small Deaths (1996), Kill the Day (1996) and Gasman (1998). From the outset, Ramsay deployed a subjective-driven worldview that was more interested in capturing a protagonist's psychological state, while leaning heavily into cinema as a sensory experience. A fine art and photography graduate, Ramsay brings a precise and deeply observational eye to her films.
Her evocative, fragmented mood pieces define some of her most immersive works. From Morvern Callar (2002) to We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011) and You Were Never Really Here (2017), Ramsay is adept at getting inside the heads of her characters while drawing the audience into a world that is at times euphoric, mysterious and terrifying.
This focus season brings together her celebrated films with works that inspired her, or that are in dialogue with her immersive, sensory way of seeing.
