A special free screening of Ousmane Sembène’s short film about Senegalese youth navigating a changing society.

One of Sembène’s early short films, Tauw tells the story of two brothers in the generation after independence. Tauw, an unemployed 20-year-old, must deal with a stifled job market in urban Senegal, while 11-year-old Ouman must confront the contradictions of his religious instruction.

Tauw dramatises how unprepared the brothers are to face the realities presented by a changing society. Although the story is a simple one, it is forcefully drawn and utterly poignant.
