From activists to academics, this essential documentary charts three decades of queer life and resistance in mainland China.

Through 20 candid interviews, Queer China, ‘Comrade’ China presents a rare chronicle of LGBTQ+ activism, cultural shifts, and legal reform from 1979 to 2008. It features writers, professors, sexologists, and filmmakers who’ve shaped — and survived — queer visibility in China.

This is one of the earliest and most comprehensive documentaries on LGBTQ+ history in China. Directed by Cui Zi’en 崔子恩, a leading queer activist and scholar, the film offers a crucial foundation for understanding how community, language, and law evolve together under authoritarian rule.

Curated by the Chinese Independent Film Foundation and Beijing Queer Film Festival.
