A dreamlike, devastating breakup story – Wong Kar Wai’s queer masterpiece pulses with longing, loss and lust in 1990s Buenos Aires.

Ho Po-wing (Leslie Cheung 張國榮) and Lai Yiu-fai (Tony Leung Chiu-wai 梁朝偉) leave Hong Kong for a fresh start in Argentina, but their turbulent relationship only grows more volatile in exile. As they drift in and out of each other’s arms, their emotional highs and lows play out against the rhythms of tango bars, fluorescent-lit motels and bustling streets. Can their love survive when all that’s left is the memory of being happy together?

Directed by Wong Kar Wai 王家衛 (In the Mood for Love, Chungking Express), Happy Together is one of the most haunting and visually iconic queer films ever made. Featuring deeply moving performances from Leslie Cheung and Tony Leung Chiu-wai, the film won Best Director at the 1997 Cannes Film Festival and remains a landmark of New Queer Cinema. Its smoky visuals and fractured storytelling still echo in global film culture today.

Curated by the Chinese Independent Film Foundation and Beijing Queer Film Festival.
