Three directors adapt Huang Chun-ming's stories of poverty and dignity in a landmark of Taiwan New Cinema.
A father takes a job as a walking advertisement for the local cinema, giving up his dignity to make ends meet. Travelling salesmen try their luck selling imported pressure cookers. A struggling family's encounter with an American military officer reveals what foreign influence gives, and what it takes away.
In three stories, ordinary people do what they can to keep pace with a Taiwan that is changing faster than they are.
Curator's note
Released in 1983, The Sandwich Man became a landmark of the emerging Taiwan New Cinema. Directed by Hou Hsiao-hsien, Tseng Chuang-hsiang and Wan Jen, the film adapts stories by celebrated Taiwanese writer Huang Chun-ming.
Commercial filmmaking favoured convention, but The Sandwich Man turned its attention to everyday lives and local experience. It also looked at what rapid change costs the people living through it.
