A visionary cult classic that satirises Australia’s obsession with cars – and a major influence on George Miller’s Mad Max.
The small outback town of Paris has a very deadly secret. The demented townfolk like to lure unsuspecting passers-by into grisly car crashes so they can salvage the car parts for money and more disturbingly harvest the accident victims' body parts for twisted medical experiments. When a hapless outsider happens upon this deadly town he finds himself in a life-and-death battle for survival.
A cult classic in the making, Peter Weir’s debut feature heralded the birth of a singular artist and the burgeoning offshoot of two exciting Australian film scenes that later came to be known as Ozploitation and the Australian New Wave.
Featuring iconic car designs such as the now famous ‘spiked’ VW Beetle, The Cars That Ate Paris has been an influence on many genre and exploitation films to follow.
Presented with the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia’s digital restoration program NFSA Restores – reviving our cinema icons.
Nothing can top The Cars That Ate Paris for sheer weirdness … A complicated satire and a violent and eccentric classic.
Focus on Peter Weir (Wed 29 Jan – Fri 14 Feb 2025)
