An Australian New Wave classic and a nightmarish portrait of our climate in disarray.
Sydney Lawyer David Burton (Richard Chamberlain) is assigned an intriguing case: four Indigenous men accused of murdering one of their own. Coupled with this is David’s growing nightmarish visions of an impending apocalypse. As he gets closer to learning the truth, his visions get darker as the erratic weather occurrences begin to point to a terrifying reality to his troubling dreams.
Teaming up again with Academy Award-winning Cinematographer Russell Boyd, Peter Weir’s third feature coming off the triumph of Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975) is considered the pinnacle of the Australian New Wave Cinema. Featuring a charismatic performance by David Gulpilil, The Last Wave's theme of climate in freefall is a haunting and gripping fever dream that is startlingly prescient.
A minor triumph of atmosphere and nightmare imaginings.
