Focusing on the life-long relationship of cousins Mata, Missy and Makareta, this empathetic drama recounts a story of female friendship, struggle and family.
This sprawling drama breathes cinematic life into the 1992 novel by Patricia Grace about the diverging paths of three Maori cousins in New Zealand.
Based on the 1992 novel by Patricia Grace, Cousins trembles with sound, colour and emotion, focusing on the injustices of Aotearoa/New Zealand’s stolen generation. Connected by blood, but separated by forced removals, Mata, Missy and Makareta’s generation-long quest to reunite is harrowing, inspiring, and powerfully acted. Shedding light on the colonial violence in the history of Aotearoa/New Zealand, Cousins is a passionate and deeply personal film, brought to life by a dynamic ensemble cast.
Before this screening, we will be honoured with an introduction, performance and ceremony in celebration of Maori traditions, including some of those depicted in the film, Cousins.
