When
After an emotional outburst at home, a young boy runs off into the night, embarking on an adventure that will take him to the faraway land that is home to the wild things.
Struggling with the emotional ups and downs of daily life, Max notices his behaviour becoming difficult to control. After throwing a tantrum with his loving mother, Max bolts out of the house and into the night. Taking to the high seas, he lands on a far-off island where other wild things run amok.
Curator’s note
Adapted from Maurice Sendak’s 1963 picture book of the same name, Where the Wild Things Are is a story of emotional growth set in a world of backyard cubbyhouses, bedroom forts and the wild imaginations of playful kids.
Central to both is a young character finding it difficult to understand the effects his behaviour has on the people (and wild things) around him. Max experiences raw emotions throughout the film, but doesn't realise that he can control his behaviour.
Where the Wild Things Are is set in America, but was filmed and produced in Melbourne and regional Victoria. Perhaps that makes us the wild things.
Tickets to Kids' Flicks with Feelings sessions include a pre-screening talk that introduces the concept of emotional intelligence to younger viewers, as well as a take-home activity kit.
