When
30 years after meeting Marc Jacobs in the New York fashion scene, director Sofia Coppola sits down with the fashion designer for a personal look at his career.
Take yourself back to 1992. Marc Jacobs is revealing his famous grunge collection in New York, and 'It Girl' Sofia Coppola is runway-side. Now 30 years later, they meet on camera to hang out as lifelong friends, but also to tell the story of Marc’s career from enfant terrible to fashion giant.
The pair cross paths with Sonic Youth, Chloë Sevigny and Winona Ryder along the way.
Curator’s note
It’s fitting that Sofia Coppola’s name is in the title of her new fashion documentary. She’s a character in the film, a guide, and there’s a feeling that her presence unlocks something in Marc by Sofia. What is unlocked feels very different to other fashion films.
Whereas some fashion documentarians focus on their subject with an adoring gaze, what we observe here are friends, peers and equals. In a way, Sofia uses the film to illuminate Marc’s career for us, but along the way Marc illuminates Sofia’s.
It’s a balanced meeting of minds here where ego has no currency, and there’s a confidence in being casual.
