As 2024 approaches, let us take you back in time to experience the collective anxiety of 31 December, 1999.
A macro snapshot of the way computer technology has become integral to our way of life, including the way we panic.
Through unprecedented access to never-before-seen archival material, Time Bomb Y2K explores early-90s caution to late-90s hysteria. Home video and raw footage provide first-hand accounts from computer programmers, doomsday survivalists, militia members and apocalyptic evangelist Christians who grapple with the potential for disaster as the year 2000 looms.
Curator's Note
The 1990s were an interesting time: the internet was new-ish, Kenny G was at the peak of his game and we all thought we were hurtling towards societal collapse.
Told without narration – it's not needed – and comprised of hundreds of clips from the archives, Brian Becker and Marley McDonald's thoroughly engrossing documentary offers an immersion into the media landscape as the world edged closer to the new millennium and the growing threat that the date format in computer systems could bring down society.
Whether you were there to live it, or want to experience it for the first time, Time Bomb Y2K offers a wildly nostalgic/historical ride.
