Visionary designer, uber optimist and creative madman Bruce Mau takes centre stage in Benji & Jono Bergmann’s beautifully designed documentary.
Design is the act of giving shape to our lives and our world. We are all designing all the time.
Our 1pm screening on Sun 20 Mar will feature a live virtual Q&A with documentary subject Bruce Mau and Professor Lisa Grocott, Director of WonderLab at Monash University.
In Mau, design visionary Bruce Mau jumps straight out of the gate with a statement as grand as his own career: “If everything around us is designed then we all have the capacity to change the world” – and change the world he has set out to do.
Beginning in graphic design, Bruce Mau’s career has expanded at the largest of scales to encapsulate the huge breadth of design from fonts, books and exhibitions to ambitious projects rebranding Guatemala and redesigning Mecca.
In their articulate portrait of the visionary thinker, the Bergmanns interview a veritable who’s who of the design community including architects extraordinaire Rem Koolhaas and Bjarke Ingels, MoMA Senior Curator Paolo Antonelli and Mau’s partner and collaborator Bisi Williams. The resulting film juxtaposes micro design with the macro, the seen with the unseen and – at its very core – the profoundly personal with the professional.
