Loosely based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, this was the first of several important collaborations between key classical era director Fernández and the extraordinary María Félix. Set at the time of the Mexican Revolution, it follows the star-crossed romance between a revolutionary general (Pedro Armendáriz) and the wild and impulsive daughter (Félix) of one of a recently seized town’s most wealthy men.

Beautifully shot by famed cinematographer Gabriel Figueroa (Buñuel’s Los olvidados and Ford’s The Fugitive), it dexterously combines the tropes of heightened melodrama, romantic comedy and fantastical Sternbergian reverie.
