Suzuki regular Tamio Kawachi (Story of a Prostitute, Youth of the Beast) stars as a rebellious teenager embroiled in the worlds of crime, prostitution and violence in this fascinating exposé of burgeoning consumerism, clashing values and post-war malaise. Suzuki’s stylish contribution to the Sun Tribe subgenre – a controversial grouping of films exploring Japanese youth’s embrace of Western popular culture, capitalistic hedonism and existential disillusionment – was singled out by influential publication Kinema Junpo as one of the director’s “early masterpieces”.
